Culture and care

Overview of the classification of Dahlias:

Dahlias are classified according to their typical traits and characteristics:

Double Flowered Dahlias

Decorative Dahlias

The inflorescence is entirely filled with ray flowers alone. The petals are broad and flat with the tips being rounded or slightly pointed (they can also be somewhat laciniate).

Height: from 40 to 150 cm

Flower size: from a few centimetres to more than 30 cm

Waterlily Dahlias

Waterlily dahlias belong to the Decorative Group but have certain specific characteristics. What makes them so special is their broad, sturdy, flat petals. The inflorescence has a flat look, with the thickness being about half that of the diameter. This group contains many good cutting dahlias.
Height: from 50 cm
Flower size: usually approx. 10 to 20 cm

Cactus Dahlias
The ray flowers of cactus dahlias are rolled up along more than two-thirds of their length. The petals of cactus dahlias can be pointed straight up as well as curving toward the centre or toward the outer edge of the inflorescence. The petals are usually narrow and pointed. If the tips are deeply incised as well, these dahlias are sometimes called 'spider dahlias'.
Height: from 40 to 150 cm
Flower size: from approx. 10 to more than 30 cm

Semi-cactus Dahlias

The face of the inflorescence is entirely covered with petals and the ray flowers are somewhat broader at the base than in the case of cactus dahlias. The petals are flat or somewhat arched, and are rolled up along less than half their length.
Height: from 40 to 150 cm
Flower size: from approx. 10 to more than 30 cm

Ball Dahlias
The inflorescence is entirely covered with petals, and the ray flowers are rolled up along more than half their length so that they form little funnels. The floral shape is round and sometimes a little flattened on top. The rolled-up petals are arranged in a spiral pattern around the centre.
Height: usually 60 to 100 cm
Flower size: usually from 8 to 12 cm, sometimes larger as well.

Pompon Dahlias

The little flower heads are smaller and rounder than the ball dahlias and the petals are rolled inward over their entire length.

Height: from approx. 50 cm to approx. 100 cm

Flower size: from 2 centimetres to approx. 6 cm

Miscellaneous Dahlias

Varieties that cannot be classified into any of these groups fall into the miscellaneous category. Included in this group are the Orchid-flowering Dahlias, Giraffe Dahlias and Semi Double-flowering Dahlias such as:

Dahlietta, Dahlinova

These are hybrids produced by crossing the original dahlia species. The flower is partially double. Their most important characteristic is their compact, heavily branched habit. They are floriferous and available early in the spring as a flowering pot plant. Suitable for growing in flower boxes, containers and beds.

All in all, a rich assortment. Everyone who loves gardening will have a wide range of plants to pick from for their own garden - whether that garden is large or small, whether the garden is based on a single colour, or whether for planting in flower boxes or in pots to place on the patio, sun lounge, deck or even the balcony.
